Metrology and Measurement Laboratory

Metrology and measurement are essential aspects of mechanical engineering, playing a critical role in manufacturing, quality control, machine performance, and product reliability. Accurate measurement ensures dimensional precision, proper functioning of machine components, and compliance with engineering standards. Metrology involves the science of measurement, including the principles of measuring instruments, calibration, measurement accuracy, precision, and the identification and minimization of measurement errors. The Virtual Metrology and Measurement Laboratory provides an interactive platform for students to understand the principles, operation, and applications of various measuring instruments and techniques. The laboratory covers experiments on pressure gauge and strain gauge calibration, displacement measurement using LVDT, taper measurement using a sine bar, optical flats, alignment measurement, gear tooth measurement, and screw thread measurement. Through virtual experiments, students can explore different measurement parameters, analyze results, identify sources of error, and understand methods to improve measurement accuracy. These experiments will strengthen students’ conceptual understanding and practical skills, preparing them to perform experiments confidently in a physical laboratory and apply measurement principles to real-world engineering and manufacturing applications.
